Language Arts -   

Upcoming Due Dates:

1. Read 30 minutes and/or 15 pages each night.  Your AR test  (hint:  The Outsiders) & your reading log is due on 3/9.  I've scheduled 3/13 in the Media Center for our class to take The Outsiders AR quiz.
2. The Outsiders - Test on 3/6/2012 - Chapters 1 - 6


Week at a Glance:

• Monday 2/27 - The Outsiders - Finish reading chapter 2 and 3.  Record character information on your graphic organizer.  Divide into character groups.  Time permitting - gather intext citations to support your impressions of your character.
• Tuesday 2/28 - Characterization Activity.  Finish anaylzing text.  Report findings using post-it notes, dialogue bubbles, etc... on class poster.  Download Characterization Posters  Time Permitting - Read/Begin Chapter 4 independently.  Mark text showing indications of how Johnny feels during this chapter.  Consider his feelings by analyzing his actions, the dialogue and what Ponyboy (out narrator) says about him.
• Wednesday - 2/29 - Warm Up - Prewrite a paragraph from Johnny's point of view.  In other words, you ARE Johnny.  You must write as Johnny might write in his journal before he falls asleep that night in the church. HW:  Revise and edit your rough draft.  Write your final paragaph - due tomorrow.   This paragraph should be ERROR FREE and your best writing.   It will be due Thursday at the beginning of class.  You may type your final copy or write it in blue/black ink.  Spelling and grammar will count!
• Thursday, 3/1 - Turn in your Johnny point of view paragraph.  Sentence Structure/Grammar Guru:  Download Chapter 1 – Mentor Sentences  Read Chapter 5.  Analyze Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay."  Literary allusions. What are they? Why do writers use them? Tone and Mood: How do they influence the reader?  Download Chapter 5 Allusion   Download Allusion Ppt Cloze Notes   Download Allusion-Art Connection Activity Sheets
• Friday, 3/2 - Warm Up - Re-read and continue analysis of "Nothing Gold Can Stay" within the context of the story. Think/pair/share.  Choose a quote from the chapter that adds a layer of depth to the personality of Johnny, Ponyboy, or Dally and record it on a sticky note to add to the character's poster.  Whole group - discuss the author's use of this literary device. Analyze the the use of metaphor in this piece of poetry and how the author alludes to meaning within the context of the story and in one's own life experience.  Look for examples of figurative language devices within the poem by analyzing it line by line.

• Thursday, 3/1 - Finish India Revealed.  Presentations begin.   
• Friday, 3/2 - Warm-Up - Write a summary of what you learned about India through the documentary India Revealed.  Presentations continue.

• Monday, 2/20 - President's Day - Student/Teacher holiday
• Tuesday, 2/21 - Warm-up - Corrections to C.A.R.S Lesson 2.  Analyze your answers.  On a separate sheet of paper, write your original answer with a one sentence explanation of why it was wrong, and then write the correct answer including an explanation of your reasoning.  All students will participate regardless of grade.  Finished?  Complete notes/exercises from Grammar for Writing pages 125-133 on Adjectives & read/write a paragraph summary from the Scholastic magazine.  The article is your choice.  The Outsiders - Welcome to the 60s! Music, commercials, movie clips, slang.  Discuss the 1950s and 1960s to set the stage for our novel.
• Wednesday, 2/22 - Warm-up -  Finish Grammar for Writing notes & exercises - Adjectives chapter.  Complete for HW.  Writer's Notebook: Download Writing Prompt - Day 1  Share responses.  The Outsiders anticipation guides - whole group activity.  Begin reading chapter 1.
• Thursday 2/23 - Turn in Adjective notes/exercises. Writer's NB - "Conformity."  Clean out writing folders & create an Outsiders folder. Read and respond.  Download Characterization Packet - The Outsiders  .    Read Chapter 1 and begin characterization notes on the characters.  Use the grid graphic organizer. 
• Friday, 2/24 - Read and finish Chapter 1 & 2 - character notes on the graphic organizer.  Assign groups & character for analysis activity.   Begin analyzing Ch 1 & 2 for textual evidence for your assigned character.  Use the packet (see Thursday, 2/23).  MiniLesson on collecting evidence from the text.

• Wednesday - 2/22 Continue taking notes on Chapter 7, Section 1 & 2.  Answer Section 1 & 2 questions #s 1 - 6.  HW:  Finish Section 1 notes/questions & take notes on Section 2.  You will have 20 minutes in class tomorrow.

• Monday 2/13 - Individual Writing Conferences for final revisions. This is a major test grade.  The expectation for this project is that the student will present as the expert on their chosen topic.  Average work will earn an average grade.  You've had 9 days of in-school support.  Put the finishing touches on your projects.  If you need school resources/computers, come in before school to use the Media Center.

***  We will begin reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton.  You may pre-order this book at the Husky Hut or buy it at any used bookstore in the area.  I have a class set, but it is always a good idea to have your own copy of the book if possible! Have purchased by Tuesday, Feb. 21st.

HW - If you needed extra time, your essay is due at the beginning of class on Monday, February 13, 2012.  This is a gift!  Late Penalty applies after this date - one letter grade for each day late.  This is a test grade.

• Monday, 2/6 - Research your chosen topic.  Meet with me to receive approval for your questions.  Go to Cobb Virtual Library and find an article on your topic.  Create a source card/begin a "Works Cited" page (template under "Social Studies" Resources.  Create note cards to begin answering one of your questions.
• Tuesday, 2/7 - Continue researching your questions.  Continue building source/note cards & your "Works Cited" page.  While you are researching your questions, begin saving images for your PowerPoint, if you find something that supports your topic.  HW/Checkpoint: Due on Wednesday - 2 source cards/8-10 note cards.
• Wednesday, 2/8 -   Research - Book Cart day
• Thursday, 2/9 - Research - Media Center.  HW:  minimum  30 bullet Points due on Friday!!!
• Friday - 2/10 - Checkpoint grade:  30 bullet points.  Works cited page update. Continue research in 7th grade computer lab.

YOUR FINAL PRODUCT - Speaker’s Notecards and PowerPoint Presentation:

You are now the expert on your subject.  Your PowerPoint must have visuals - illustrations, graphics, maps, charts, etc... - and contain no more than 3 to 5 bullet points per slide.  You WILL NOT read your slides.  Do not put sentences on your slides.  The slides only reinforce what you are ing to your audience about your subject.  Remember that your audience is from Mars and knows nothing about human history, so BE DETAILED in your explanations. 

Your Powerpoint needs:

1. a title slide  with your name on it
2. an introductory slide - who? what? where? when? how? why?  I need to know because I'm from Mars!
3. a slide for each research question - DO NOT put your research question on the slide!!!  Use key words instead. The slide must have visuals and only 3 to 5 bullet points. Bullet points are either one or two words OR a short phrase. NO SENTENCES!!!!
4. a concluding slide
5. Previous student examples (Note - You need a "Works Cited" page at the end of your PowerPoint or a printed copy to turn in.)  Download Tiananmen Square.example3     Download Tiananmen Square.example2  

You will need a minimum of 7 SPEAKER cards (not your research note cards).  Speaker cards are bullet points that help trigger your brain regarding the areas you want to discuss.  Suggested cards include the following:

• 1 notecard for intro.
• 1 notecard for each research question (5 total)
• 1 notecard for conclusion

Some of you may choose to do 1 notecard per slide in your power point.  Note:  Research Note Cards are different from speaker’s note cards!

 Works Cited page required on your PowerPoint:

1. MLA format Example of a Works Cited page–
2. Use the following website to formate your sources:  http://www.citationmachine.net  is helpful (and approved by your L.A. teachers!)
3. Copy and paste your citation onto this TEMPLATE:  Download Works Cited Template.  Remember to double space & to use the hanging indent.
