Upcoming Due Dates:
- Read 30 minutes and/or 15 pages each night. Your AR test (hint: The Outsiders) & your reading log is due on 3/9. I've scheduled 3/13 in the Media Center for our class to take The Outsiders AR quiz.

Week at a Glance:
- Monday 2/27 - The Outsiders - Finish reading chapter 2 and 3. Record character information on your graphic organizer. Divide into character groups. Time permitting - gather intext citations to support your impressions of your character.
- Tuesday 2/28 - Characterization Activity. Finish anaylzing text. Report findings using post-it notes, dialogue bubbles, etc... on class poster. Download Characterization Posters Time Permitting - Read/Begin Chapter 4 independently. Mark text showing indications of how Johnny feels during this chapter. Consider his feelings by analyzing his actions, the dialogue and what Ponyboy (out narrator) says about him.
- Wednesday - 2/29 - Warm Up - Prewrite a paragraph from Johnny's point of view. In other words, you ARE Johnny. You must write as Johnny might write in his journal before he falls asleep that night in the church. HW: Revise and edit your rough draft. Write your final paragaph - due tomorrow. This paragraph should be ERROR FREE and your best writing. It will be due Thursday at the beginning of class. You may type your final copy or write it in blue/black ink. Spelling and grammar will count!
- Thursday, 3/1 - Turn in your Johnny point of view paragraph. Sentence Structure/Grammar Guru: Download Chapter 1 – Mentor Sentences Read Chapter 5. Analyze Robert Frost's poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay." Literary allusions. What are they? Why do writers use them? Tone and Mood: How do they influence the reader? - Friday, 3/2 - Warm Up - Re-read and continue analysis of "Nothing Gold Can Stay" within the context of the story. Think/pair/share. Choose a quote from the chapter that adds a layer of depth to the personality of Johnny, Ponyboy, or Dally and record it on a sticky note to add to the character's poster. Whole group - discuss the author's use of this literary device. Analyze the the use of metaphor in this piece of poetry and how the author alludes to meaning within the context of the story and in one's own life experience. Look for examples of figurative language devices within the poem by analyzing it line by line.
