- Wednesday - 1/11 - **Media Center to check out books – 20 minutes - non-fiction and/or biography** - WARM-UP - The Reader’s Journey – Read page 245 “ A Growing Remembrance: Art Takes Root Near Ground Zero” and answer ?s 1 & 2. Think/respond/pair/share 2.Video – Expository Text 3.Activity – Think/Pair/Share – Categorize persuasive/expository writing prompts HW - Using your Frayer Model notes from yesterday’s lesson (RJ pg. 244), write an expository paragraph that explains the four (4) common ways that information is organized in expository writing.
- Thursday 1/12 - Warm-Up: Formative Checkpoint (no grade). How can I recognize expository vs. persuasive writing? Task: Think/group/share - Analyze student writing samples from the 8th grade writing test. Students will analyze two writing samples and rate them according to the state rubric. We began this activity today and will finish it tomorrow. HOMEWORK - READ!
- Friday 1/13 - Continue writing sample analysis activity. Think/group/share. Share results in whole class discussion. Compare students ratings to the official ratings for each writing domain. Exit ticket - Is this writing sample expository or persuasive? How do you know? Write instructions for the writing situation you just analyzed.

- Friday 1/13 - WarmUp - CRCT book - pages 71-72 - Apartheid. Discuss answers. View post Apartheid S. Aftica video clip. Discuss. Think/group/share - In small groups, discuss the map you created last night on the conflicts in Africa over the last 30 years. What surprised you about? What did you learn in the process of creating the map?
- Whole group discussion w/ Smartboard interactive map. Each group color coded a country and discussed the loss of life &/or the number of people displaced by the conflict. Maps were turned in at the end of the class period.
